Girls on the Run of the Chippewa Valley

Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity based positive youth development program for girls in 3rd-5th grade. We teach life skills through dynamic interactive lessons and running games. The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k running event. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.

Girls on the Run is an Independent Council of Girls on the Run International, which has a network of over 225 councils across the United States and Canada.

We use the power of running to provide girls with the tools to:

  • Recognize our power and responsibility to be intentional in our decision making
  • Embrace our differences and find strength in our connectedness
  • Express joy, optimism and gratitude through our words, thoughts and actions
  • Nurture our physical, emotional and spiritual health
  • Lead with an open heart and assume positive intent
  • Stand up for ourselves and others

We use exercise, positive reinforcement, and encouraging role models to help girls discover the confidence they need in those critical pre-teen years and beyond. Through interactive activities such as running, playing games, and discussing important issues, participants learn how to celebrate being their unique and real selves. Our hope is that every girl believes and can say, "I belong just the way I am."

Spotlight of the day! Today's Girls on the Run Spotlight is coach Christina! Christina loves running inside and outside of GOTR. She has completed eight marathons, three half marathons, three sprint triathlons, and many more 5K's and 10K's. Christina especially enjoys sharing the Girls on the Run experience with her five daughters who have all participated in the program. Her daughters are what prompted Christina to become a GOTR coach. "What we are really doing is using running as a tool to teach these beautiful girls important life skills. We teach them to take care of their body, mind, and spirit. We reinforce self respect and choosing to make good, healthy decisions. We teach them by example to be a positive role model at home, school, and in their community." -Christina, Girls on the Run assistant coach

Spotlight of the day! Today's Spotlight features Girls on the Run coach Elizabeth! Elizabeth loves to run and exercise with her family, whether it be at the gym or on a ball field. Girls on the Run has also been a way for Elizabeth and her family to be active together! “I always like to remind the girls that they need to remember the power of ‘yet.’ There will be points during our season when it is much harder than you have energy or desire for. On those days, I encourage (the girls) to just think about how they are not there ‘yet,' but they will get there. That one, tiny word gives you permission to reflect on what you need to do to accomplish your goals and move forward.” –Elizabeth, Girls on the Run head coach

Some of these outdoor activities include camping, riding bike trails and taking her puppy to the dog park! April also enjoys the Girls on the Run 5K and seeing all the participants come together. "My advice to the girls would be to remember that the lessons we learn in Girls on the Run are LIFE lessons. Work hard, have fun, be yourself and keep moving forward!" -April, Girls on the Run head coach and site liaison

Spotlight of the day! Today's Girls on the Run Spotlight, coach Shawna, shares a GOTR memory that is well worth the read! Check it out, and have a great weekend! "My most memorable moment happened last year when I ran the 5k with a 3rd grade girl. I, honestly, am not a runner. I start the 5k with a little jog, but then walk. After the practice 5k, I anticipated my gal would be content with that, as it seemed to be a struggle for her. We started that race, and I, of course, was ready to walk after a few minutes in, but my girl would not let me. She motivated me through the entire race. She kept telling me, 'Keep going, Ms. Shawna!*,' 'You can do this!,' 'You're amazing!'... I ended up running the entire race and can truly say I have never felt more motivated. I could not have asked for a better running buddy." -Shawna, Girls on the Run coach and site liaison

She says this allows them to connect on a different level outside of the classroom. “I love to watch the girls grow throughout the season and from year to year. There have been so many gains and accomplishments that these girls (have made).” –Jodi, Girls on the Run coach

Spotlight of the day! Today's Girls on the Run Spotlight is board member, Heather. In her free time, Heather enjoys reading. She can often be found reading three or four books at a time! Heather became affiliated with Girls on the Run when her daughter joined, and has been a board member ever since. “Being part of Girls on the Run is important to me because I want girls in the Chippewa Valley to have the opportunity to participate in this program. Spotlight of the day! For our first Spotlight, we'll be introducing head coach and board member Allison! Allison finds it important to be fit and take care of herself. She does this by hiking, running and being outside, but she also enjoys winding down at the end of the day to read and watch Netflix. “My best advice for girls that participate in Girls on the Run is to let people in to share in their joyful times and their tough times. As girls and as human beings, we are stronger together.” –Allison, Girls on the Run head coach and board member
